True Empowerment
I am a member of KFTC because my passion in life is to empower others.
My husband and I married in a church full of people we love and cherish. During an election year, we found out that the Deacon, who was one of my husband's Groomsmen, was unable to vote due to a mistake he made when he was a young man. It made no sense to us that he had paid his debt to society both financially and while incarcerated, worked a full-time job, paid taxes, worked in the community to help young men stay away from the same mistakes he made as a young person, and was an established leader in the church, but could not vote. KY is one of only 4 states that would look upon our friend and say "You are unworthy of forgiveness and a second chance. You are your past mistakes". I am sorry, but that is not something my faith tradition tells me is true.
What positive change do you want to see in Kentucky?
If you are anything like me, you want to see
A fair and just Kentucky that allows all non-violent former felons (returning citizens) the opportunity to participate in the democratic process.
The Kentucky I want to live in has clean water, a just economy, where the poorest people do not pay more in taxes than the wealthiest. The Kentucky I want to live in is a place for citizens to get involved and where the voices of regular folks trump the voices of big business or political agendas. The Kentucky I want to live in offers health care to the most vulnerable.
KFTC has helped Christian and I learn how powerful our voices are. We have learned to lobby our elected officials, sharing our voice and the voices of our friends and neighbors. They have taught us not merely to complain about the world's failures to live up to our expectations, but to get up and use our voices, time, and talents to make the world a better place.
We even partnered with KFTC to register voters at our wedding in 2010. Now, that's love!
If you also care about a just economy, equity, an end to racism, clean water and air, and allowing everyone to be part of the democratic process, please consider supporting KFTC and the work that we do. Any amount makes a difference. You can also be a part of the change by forwarding my page, creating your own, or contacting KFTC about other ways to get involved.
Micah 6:8 is our marriage verse. We live it out, in part, with the work we do through KFTC.
"He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?"
